'Avengers: Endgame' co-director Joe Russo reveals the one film that would bring him back to a Marvel set.

With Avengers: Endgame marking the ultimate film in the superhero saga, fans are left to wonder what's left for the MCU characters whose stories are not terminating. Will we eventually see a new wave of Avengers, similar to the new wave of X-Men we saw with First Class and Apocalypse? From Spiderman and Black Widow to Dr. Strange and The Guardians, not every Avengers hero is saying sayonara with Endgame.

While Chris Evans has made clear that Endgame will mark his final turn as Captain America, other MCU sequels are currently in pre and post-production. Furthermore, are we so certain that Chris Evans would turn down an opportunity to reprise his role a decade from now? Not to mention, now that Disney has secured the rights to the X-Men franchise, several comic book plots – interweaving the two sets of saviors – are open for exploration.

Avengers: Endgame co-director, Joe Russo, sat down with Rajeev Masand to discuss the one project that would pull him back into the MCU post-Endgame. That special project is an X-Men – Avengers – Fantastic Four mash-up.

Joe Russo talks 'Secret Wars' movie Post 'Avengers: Endgame'

Speaking on behalf of Disney's acquisition of Fox characters, Joe Russo explained that the integration with these characters is "100%" on the horizon. Russo told Rajeev Masand:

"I haven't talked to Kevin specifically about how he plans to introduce these characters or when. All I can say is that you don't acquire Fox to get the Fantastic Four and the X-Men to put them on the sidelines and not tell stories about them. So, I'm assuming it's…I've joked…that the one thing that could bring me back to work at a Marvel film is Secret Wars…I think…the Universe is only going to get bigger and the next time they "event-tize" it with some giant movie, it' going to be even bigger than Infinity War and Endgame…"

Joe Russo explains that, with the acquisition, it's likely that an even bigger mash-up than Endgame will eventually present itself. Though this movie is probably several years off, if Disney knows what's good for the corporation, they will plan for a Secret Wars film and place Joe Russo back in the captain's chair. So, what exactly is The Secret Wars? Only one of the most iconic comic book mash-ups of all time.

'The Secret Wars' Explained

Marvel Super Heroes Secret Wars, often shortened to just Secret Wars, is a twelve-issue American comic book crossover combining characters from the Avengers, the X-Men, and the Fantastic Four.

In the series, an enemy called The Beyonder grows fascinated by the presence of superheroes and villains on earth, and he decides to transport a set of them to "Battleworld:" a planet in a far away galaxy. He commands the heroes and villains to slay their enemies to gain access to all they desire.

As for characters from the Avengers, you have Captain America, Spiderman, She-Hulk, Hulk, Thor, Wasp, Captain Marvel, Hawkeye, and Iron Man. From the X-Men comes Professor X, Rogue, Storm, Wolverine, Colossus, and more.

From the Fantastic Four, you get the Human Torch, Mr. Fantastic, and Thing. Talk about one remarkable ensemble! If this ever comes to fruition, it will be the movie of a lifetime, and Chris Evans would have to go back on his word to keep the public happy.
